The Nation Fund for Independent Journalism is accepting applications for two Vision 2022 Nation Fund Latinx Writing Fellows for an intensive twelve-week fellowship program. This program offers college students who identify as Latinx the opportunity to write for TheNation.com and to work with Nation editors and writers to develop skills critical for a meaningful career in journalism. Student writers will strengthen their craft, gain first-hand industry knowledge, and expand their professional connections through work with experienced journalists. The Vision 2022 Fellows will receive a stipend of $1,000 designed to allow them resources to devote time to honing their reporting and writing skills over the fall of 2022.
Created to address the systemic and longstanding lack of support for young Latinx journalists, the idea is to put together an educational series of talks and trainings with a focus on the Latinx community and Election 2022, and what most media is missing when it comes to coverage of America’s fastest growing ethnic group. The fellow will publish at least three reported articles of varying length and focus exploring the Latinx community’s complicated impact on Election 2022.
The Fellowship will run from October 12 to December 21, 2022. Fellows will participate in online editorial sessions, conversations with Nation editorial staff and one-on-one meetings as their articles move through the editorial process. Fellows will work remotely from their own campus. Fellows will receive a $1,000 stipend, plus compensation for articles upon publication. Students need to be of Latin ancestry and enrolled in a matriculating college or university undergraduate program in the United States in the fall of 2022 to be eligible.
Special programming will include election-related meetings with the Puffin Fall Fellows cohort, one-on-one trainings, and regular editorial conferences with professional editors.
Applicants must submit the following:
- A cover letter of not-more-than 250 words telling us why you want to become a Nation Fund Writing Fellow.
- Two published pieces of journalism (links are fine).
- A resume.
Applications will be accepted until 5:00pm EST, October 5, 2022. Application materials should be in Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx) format and should be emailed to email@example.com. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Any matriculating undergraduate or graduate students of Latinx ancestry at all two and four-year schools in the US who are at least eighteen years of age. Email firstname.lastname@example.org with questions.
