Victor Navasky left a galvanizing publishing legacy as The Nation’s publisher and editor and as the George T. Delacorte Professor Emeritus at Columbia University. Victor founded The Nation’s internship program close to 50 years ago, which has graduated many hundreds of independent journalists who have gone on to produce award-winning journalism, lead newsrooms, author critical books, pioneer blogs and podcasts, organize critical political campaigns and write deeply impactful journalism.
The Nation Fund for Independent Journalism has launched the Victor Navasky Memorial Fund to commemorate Victor’s legacy, and to support the internship program that he founded and which now bears his name. In partnership with Victor’s family, loved ones, and colleagues, along with The Nation’s most generous supporters, we aim to support five year’s worth of young, talented interns. We have an ambitious goal of raising $1 million over the next five years to fully fund the internship that has had a unique and unprecedented impact on independent journalism.
Former intern and Nation executive editor Richard Kim surprised attendees at Victor’s 90th birthday celebration in 2022, when he quipped that in the 20 years since he was a Nation intern “by my count…I’ve had the fortune to work alongside 541 Nation interns.” With the support of the Memorial Fund, we can support countless generations of Victor Navasky Interns for years to come.
